NEW HAMPSHIRE
Census Reports
1940
===============
You
will note in this census and the other 1940 censuses, there are a lot of birth,
marriage and death dates including the kids. This info comes mostly from family
group sheets on ancestry.com, familysearch.com, and data on obits.com,
tributes.com, find a grave.com and a few others. Practically all the New
England Putnams kept the Putnam spelling, but there are a couple of dozen
census records with the name spelled as Putman. Iլl put them down as Putnam
unless I find them spelled Putman in 1930 and earlier, then I spell as they
were recorded.

Here is part of an article in Country Doctor: he lives in the small village of Lyme, New Hampshire, lies south west of the White Mountains; two miles further west the Connecticut River divides New Hampshire from Vermont. Dartmouth Medical School and the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital are ten miles to the south, in Hanover. In 1935 the town of Lyme, which had a population of about 900, had been without a doctor for some time. Despite the great depression residents voted at a town meeting to raise $500 for the support of a doctor for the ensuing year. Bill Putnam was finishing an 18 month internship at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital when the vacancy in Lyme came to his attention. The position was ideal for his requirements; as a 9 year old he had barely escaped death in the influenza epidemic of 1918 and, inspired by his attending physician, had decided then to become a doctor in a small New Hampshire town. And so it was that on 1 January 1936 William F Putnam, M.D. hung out his shingle - or put up his plate - in Lyme, having made his first house call the night before. "Doc Putnam" had begun his career. He stayed in Lyme for 42 years, and his practice expanded to include 24 communities in two states. He once calculated that his territory encompassed more than 1000 square miles.

in GA. There are several sheets on Ancestry that have his parents as George T.
Putnam and Addie M. Welch. They identify George as the son of Jefferson Putnam
and Judith Lamphier. There is a marriage record of George L. Putnam marrying
Addie Welch on 18 dec 1917 in Rochester, NH. He is listed as 57 years old and
her age is not listed. It appears that she was only 17 years old. If the father
is really George T. Putnam, he would have been 67 years old. The marriage
record has his birth location as Peabody, MA which fits. It also has this as
his fourth marriage, which also fits. I'm going to go with it.Ӽ/span>So am I, thanks.

He is 76 NH NH NH and his wife Nancy Emmaline Clough is 72 NH. He
is a son of Rufus Putnam and Lydia C. Goss from here in Hopkinton. He was born
here December 8, 1864 and has been here all his life. Nancy is a daughter of
Charles Freeman Clough and Mary Jane Hardy and was born in December 1867 and
married Charles November 21, 1891. She will die shortly on April 7, 1940.
Charles will die here December 30, 1943.
GEORGE M. (MARTIN)
PUTNAM Hopkinton, Merrimack County
He is 76 NH NH NH and widowed as his wife Flora Etta Clough has
died. He is a farmer and has a couple of lodgers to help make ends meet. He is
a son of Charles Putnam and Almira Eastman from Hopkinton. He was born there
January 18, 1864 and married Flora here January 19, 1899 and will die here
February 9, 1951. Flora was born here too on June 23, 1861. She died here
February 1, 1929.
She is 27 CAN and says married but is living by herself and was in
Niagara, Moore County North Carolina in 1935. Good Luck here too. Once again
Rand Putnam has a pretty good idea. Best guess is Alice Leona Patten, wife of
John Richard Putnam. They were married in Bristol, NH on 14 Nov 1936. John
Richard is the guy who married 7 women. He is in South Lyndeborough in 1940.
Thanks.
She is 3 MA and listed as a daughter of Hazel Smith 28 MA and her
second husband Stanley Smith 28 CT. Try and guess
He is 76 NH NH NH and his wife Nancy Emmaline Clough is 72 NH.
Dual listing for him in Hopkinton above.
He is 57 MA NH VT and is a locomotive engineer for the Boston and
Maine Railway. His wife Minnie I. Powers is 57 NH. Also here is her widowed
mother Jane B. Powers 83 NH. They have all been here since the 1910 census. He
is a son of Philip Putnam and Lulie Atwood and was born in Concord,
Massachusetts February 3, 1883. He married Minnie in Phillipston, Massachusetts
July 27, 1905. She is a daughter of William and Jane Powers and was born in
Richmond, Cheshire County New Hampshire June 25, 1881.
He is 34 NH and married to Olive Bradley LaHar 34 NH. He is a
doctor in his own practice. Must be doing okay as they have a maid Helen
Seabury 16 NH. He is a son of Ernest Lee Putnam and Myrtle Robinson and was
born in North Woodstock, Grafton County July 27, 1905. He and Olive were in
Claremont, Sullivan County in the 1930 and in Newport, New Hampshire in 1931
and then Boston, Massachusetts in 1935. Olive is a daughter of Albert Phillip
LaHar and Frances Abigail Folsom and was born in Concord June 8, 1905 and will
die in Yuma, Arizona in March 1986. Edward will later retire and die out in
Yuma in January 1988.
She is 26 MA and says married, but is alone with her divorced
mother Susie Mason 58 ME, her divorced sister Frances Davis 32 NH. She and her
mom are shoemakers. Rand has her as the
ex-wife of William Oliver Putnam. He was the son of Thorndike Putnam and
Josephine Brown born in Florida. Josephine his divorced mom is listed next in
Brentwood and the dad Thorndike is now in Hampstead, Rockingham County. Don’t
know where Willie is though. Both families just love to keep getting divorced.
Trying for the New Hampshire State Record I guess.
She is 46 NH and divorced. Josephine Brown married Thorndike
Putnam in Windham, New Hampshire June 9, 1909 and they were in Hampstead,
Rockingham County in 190 through 1930. They must have split soon after 1930 as
he married Aletha Harvey July 16, 1933 and she died April 4, 1935. Josephine is
a daughter of William W. Brown and Josephine Beede. He is a son of Oliver
Putnam and Mary Moores from there. Josie is an officer at the Rockingham County
House of Corrections and County Farm. Back then and when I was a kid, if you
had to go to the County Jail for not overly serious stuff, you went t the
County Farm and went out daily doing farm work, picking up trash off the side
of the road and other chores of sorts. The officers watched over you and
carried shotguns just in case you wanted to take a cigarette break on the other
side of the hill.
WILLIAM
PUTNAM Derry, Rockingham County
He is 32 NH, his wife Jean is 33
Newfoundland and they have Patricia 9 MA, William 7 NH and twins Joan and Janet
5 NH. Pretty sure he is a son of Lorenzo Augustus Putnam and Mary Ann Campbell from
Fitzwilliam, Cheshire County. He was born there May 20, 1907 and was there in
1910 and 1920 and then single in Nashua in 1930. He is a meter man with the
electric company.
HOWARD PUTNAM Hampstead, Rockingham County
He is 53 NH and a farmer. His wife Esther Viola Clark is 46 NH,
and his sister Maude S. 42 NH. He is a son of Oliver Putnam and Mary Moores and
was born here October 5, 1886 and will die here in 1950. Esther is a daughter
of Benjamin Wentworth Clark and Mary Jane Bean and was born here in Hampstead
April 2, 1893 and will die here November 30, 1977.
He is 57 NH NH NH and is a clerk in a retail grocery store. He
says he is widowed and his widowed mother-in-law Winona Harvey 65 ME is with.
It is true that he had married Aletha Minona Harvey in Grand Isle, Vermont July
16, 1933 and she died April 4, 1935. But he had married Josephine Brown June 9,
1909 and they were in the 1910 through 1930 census here. They divorced and she
is in nearby Brentwood. So between 1930 and 1935, he was married twice. He is a
son of Oliver Putnam and Mary Moores from here. He was home with his mom in
1900, just married here in 1910 and then in Palm Beach Florida in 1920. His
tombstone here in Hampstead states he was born August 12, 1882 and died March
20, 1960. It then lists his wife Aletha Harvey born December 16, 1896 and died
April 4, 1935 and her mother Minona Lewis Harvey born January 18, 1874 and died
March 1, 1956.
PAULINE PUTNAM Portsmouth, Rockingham County
She is 36 NH single and lodging. She is a schoolteacher here in

13, 1904 and was at home in Milford, Hillsborough County in 1920. She will
marry Lucian Keith Fortier in Milford June 27, 1942.
ROGER PUTNAM Portsmouth, Rockingham County
He is 14 ME single and living with his widowed mother Ellen L.
Badger 41 NH. He was in York, Maine in 1930 and his mother was listed as Elinor
L. Putnam 31 NH and widowed then too and Roger was 4 6/12 ME. So, I looked at
what I had in the Maine 1930 census and BINGO here is that listing: ҅LEANOR L. (LOUISE) PUTMAN York, York County. She is 31 NH and widowed.
She has a son Roger 5 ME. She is Eleanor Louise Hennessey from Portsmouth, New
Hampshire. She was married to Joseph Perley Putnam’s son Roger Ashurst Putnam who
was born here in York and was single here in 1920. They were married November
8, 1924. He died soon afterwards on July 15, 1925. So that answers the question
as to who she married originally. And Portsmouth and York are only a couple of
miles from each other. I do do good work don’t I?

November 4, 1845 in Danvers, Massachusetts. He married Abigail E. Wingate of
